A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from the National Weather Service for all of western Massachusetts from Thursday night until Friday morning.
Meteorologists say mixed precipitation is expected for the area. Total snow accumulations of two to four inches and ice accumulations of around two tenths of an inch are expected for Hampden, eastern Hampshire and southern Worcester counties.
The predicted totals are three to six inches and ice accumulations of up to one tenth in Franklin and western Hampshire counties.
The first storm of the year caught some people by surprise. But at some hardware stores throughout the area, officials say people have been wanting lots of salt and shovels.
Residents are being asked to pick up leaves around their homes so they don't blow into the streets. If they do then it could make pre treating by DPW crews difficult.
