Springfield To Be More Open To Immigrants

The Springfield  City Council is taking the first step to pass a new ordinance banning  city employees from asking about a resident's immigration status unless  it is required by law.

The Welcoming Trust Ordinance also bans those  employees from serving as immigration officers and prevents them from  targeting institutions such as churches from providing sanctuary to  immigrants and their families.

After a twelve-member unanimous vote on  Monday, the ordinance will be sent to a committee before the council  holds another vote.

Left unanswered is how Mayor Dom Sarno is going to come out on the issue.

Councilors have said that the measure right now is veto proof.
