Officer Shot Twice-- Will Survive

Springfield Police say a 25 year old city man is being held after a shootout with officers on State Street Sunday morning.

Springfield Police Interim Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood says the officers were working a private detail at the Aquarius Club on State Street when they were told of a disturbance outside.

When officers did go outside they had found a man who had apparently been hit with a bottle.

While the officers were attending the injured party, another man approached with his hand behind his back.

When officers called for him to show his hands, the man allegedly began shooting hitting one officer in the arm and elbow.

That officer will be ok.

Officials say the man who was originally injured is cooperating with the investigation.

Meantime, the 25 year old man who allegedly began shooting, Kenneth Hernandez is being held pending arraignment in District Court.

Commissioner Clapprood says that it remains a very fluid investigation. There were three different kinds of ammunition that came out of the shooting. One belonged to the officer.

Police are looking for a third suspect. Officials say that they have a description and are actively searching for that person.

Springfield Mayor Dom Sarno says he is outraged by the Sunday morning violence.
