Springfield Fire officials say it was an alert walker last night at about 8:30 that detected a strong gas odor.
Fire Department coming out to Groveland Street, in the Forest Park area and along with Columbia Gas shut off the gas to the area.
Five homes were evacuated.
No injuries were reported.
The area was ventilated and people were allowed back inside of their homes.
Officials say it appears that a gas line at the vacant home was cut.
