The Big E says an elephant has died. According to fair officials yesterday, Beulah, an Asian elephant owned by R.W. Commerford and Sons, died of natural causes at the age of 54.
Beulah was set to be the featured elephant but was removed less than a week after her arrival as animal rights advocates claimed she was sick.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is calling on Commerford to give up its remaining elephants and for the Big E to end what it calls exploitative wild animal exhibits.
PETA officials say that the remaining elephants that the company owns should be allowed to retire in peace.
Fair President Gene Cassidy says that he is heartbroken over the news.
