A Mount Holyoke College professor is being charged with attempted murder for an incident right before Christmas in Leverett, Franklin County.
The Northwestern District Attorney's Office says Rie Hachiyanagi of South Hadley was arraigned in Orange District Court on Friday and is being held in custody until a dangerousness hearing in February. Police alleged Hachiyanagi assaulted a victim in the victim's home by beating them with a rock, fire poker and garden shears; the victim is expected to survive.
A college spokesperson has confirmed the incident involved two faculty members and that Hachiyanagi has been placed on administrative leave, and is not permitted on campus pending further review.
