Springfield Mayor Letter To Editor: "We Can And Will Do Better"

Letter to the Editor:

First of all, Springfield Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood and I condemn the tragedy that occurred to Mr. George Floyd – it was atrocious and unacceptable. I urge, hope and pray that justice and reform will occur. My sympathy, encouragement, thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Mr. George Floyd and the community of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

While unfortunately and terribly other cities in American are faced with violent protest, we here in Springfield did not experience these events. Having been on site and while myself and our Springfield Police Department are far from perfect, I must commend our Springfield Police Department and just as importantly, the protest groups who got there message through in an orderly and peaceful fashion.

While we all feel that more work has to be done, I know we have continued to make tremendous strides in building bridges to enhance community relationships, mutual respect and understanding. As far as these violent protest – ‘two wrongs do not make a right’ and in no way honors the life of Mr. George Floyd and the legacy of change and mutual respect for all of us in America.

May God rest his soul and may we all learn from this tragic event. We can and will do better.

Respectfully,

Domenic J Sarno

Mayor
