Today marks the ten-year anniversary of a devastating tornado that impacted Springfield.
The E-F-3 tornado traveled nearly 40 miles through parts of Western and Central Massachusetts, also causing extensive damage in Monson, Brimfield and Southbridge and Ludlow.
In West Springfield, a mother did all that the experts said. The woman, knowing that a tornado was on the way, took her teen daughter to the bathroom and when they saw they heard the twister coming, went into the bathtub, the mother covering her daughter. A tree came down on the home, killing the mother. The daughter survived.
In all three people died and more than 500 people were left homeless.
Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno is planning to hold a moment of silence today in front of City Hall.
