The controversial narcotics unit of the Springfield Police Department is being eliminated.
Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood announced plans on Thursday to convert the narcotics bureau into a firearms investigation unit as the city sees an uptick in gun violence.
Illegal drug investigations will be transferred to Western Massachusetts task forces with an expanded role from Springfield police, according to Clapprood.
Last year, a review from the Department of Justice indicated the SPD's narcotics bureau engaged in a pattern of excessive force.
The police department going forward is also revising its use-of-force policy to ban choke holds except in extreme circumstances.
Under the policy which went on line in January, an officer could only use the hold if his life or others were in jeopardy.
Meantime, the Commissioner and the Chairman of the City Council Public Safety Committee have vowed to work together on the issue. They have agreed to communicate better and more often on the matter.
