State Education To Decide School Masking Once And For All

The state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education is set to decide whether the school year will start with a statewide mask mandate.

The panel today will vote on whether Education Commissioner Jeff Riley can issue the mandate.

Riley wants a statewide mask requirement for all students, teachers and staff at least until October 1st.

After October 1st, middle and high schools would be able to lift mandates if 80-percent of students and staff are vaccinated.

Meantime, last night in East Lognmeadow the School Committee got an earful from residents. Some were upset with them for allowing parents to decide the issue of masking in schools. Others were not so supportive.

The parental decision is in effect now- but could go by the wayside because of the State Board decision later today.
