The Springfield Board of Police Commissioners met for the first time on Monday.
The chair of the five-member board, Gary Berte says among the goals are to rebuild trust from community members over concerns about the way disciplinary issues in the Springfield Police Department have been handled in the past.
The Springfield City Council pushed for the mayor to restore the oversight panel.
That action was taken after a commonwealth Supreme Court ruling that sided with the council in February. Springfield Police Superintendent Cheryl Clapprood will maintain the day-to-day operational needs of the department.
