In West Springfield, the City Council Monday night approved a measure that will set the stage for recreational pot to be sold on the retail level.
The council approved the measure, submitted by Mayor Will Reichelt that will allow for an establishment but not closer than 500 feet from a school, or 300 feet from an existing residential establishment.
Previously the town only allowed medical marijuana to be sold.
At least two city councilors, Michael Eger and Daniel O’Brien were seeking to put the issue on the ballot. But that will not happen.
Mayor Will Reichelt says he is pleased with the council action.
There is no timetable for opening of establishments although the Planning Board and other officials will first need to approve any proposal that comes about.
