State Environmental officials are investigating the killing of a raccoon in front of the Springfield Fire Headquarters of Worthington Street.
Fire Commissioner B-J Calvi says he saw a raccoon last week - foaming from the mouth and after trying to use other city resources was forced to run the animal over with his city owned vehicle.
PETA says there were other ways to deal with the issue.
The mayor says time was of the essence and the Commissioner did what needed to be done in the name of public safety.
