A magnitude 4.8 earthquake in New Jersey this morning is the strongest felt in Massachusetts in over 20 years.
The state's Emergency Management Agency said it received multiple reports of shaking from across the state.
Stephen Holler, a seismologist with Fordham University, says this sized earthquake is pretty rare for the area.
Holler says the tri-state hasn't been geologically active in a very long time, but it doesn't mean it can't happen.
He adds there are fault lines that run through Manhattan but they haven't been active, unlike the West Coast that has more activity.
The earthquake caused no damage in Massachusetts, Connecticut or Rhode Island.
The U.S. Geological Survey said there's nearly a 50 percent possibility of aftershocks that could register 3-point-0 or stronger in the next week.
