Governor Healey Applies Brakes To Toll Debate

Governor Maura Healey says she will not propose collecting tolls from motorists driving into the state.

The governor made the announcement Monday, in response to an idea by MassDOT Secretary Monica Tibbits-Nutt.

In a discussion earlier this month with the advocacy group WalkMassachusetts, Tibbits-Nutt brought up the idea of border tolls.

Motorists currently pay tolls on the Mass Turnpike and at certain bridges and tunnels.

Governors Chris Sununu of New Hampshire and Governor Dan McKee had rejected the proposal outright.

Healey meantime, adds she expressed opposition to the secretary's idea but also reiterated confidence in Tibbits-Nutt's leadership.
