Governor Healey: "The Money Is Nearly Gone"

Governor Maura Healey says the money allocated for the emergency shelter system is nearly gone.

The state has spent 528-million-dollars in the current fiscal year on shelters, which is most of the 575-million-dollars allocated for the system.

A spending bill that would add hundreds of millions of dollars for emergency shelters remains stalled in the state legislature.

Leaders in the legislature are confident that an agreement will be reached soon.

Some lawmakers have been balking at the price tag involved.

State Senator John Velis says that unlike the federal government, the state has to constantly balance its books. And the price tag for migrant shelters for years is too much for the taxpayer to afford.
