Arraignments Continue As UMass Chancellor Addresses Student Arrest Issues

Another group of UMass demonstrators has been arraigned on trespassing and other charges for failing to remove a pro-Palestine encampment and leave the campus.

In all, 130 people were arrested including students and some faculty members who were calling on UMass to divest from companies profiting from the war in Gaza.

The arraignments are expected to continue into next week.

Demonstrators who were in court yesterday pleaded not guilty and were released.

Their next court dates are scheduled for July 9th.

Meantime, Javier Reyes, the Chancellor of the UMass Amehrst Campus told the Student Senate that he called out local police to help keep the peace during demonstrations because crowds were increasing and some of the people involved were not recognized as being part of the student body.
