Two Arrested After Warwick Chief Deliberately Struck By Motorist

Two people are in custody after the Warwick police chief was hit twice by the driver of a vehicle during a traffic stop on Tuesday.

Chief David Shoemaker was assisting a fellow officer at the stop, when a driver later identified as Michael Martelle allegedly hit the chief and then fled the scene.

Police went in pursuit but ended the chase near Hinsdale, New Hampshire, due to safety concerns.

Hinsdale police located Martelle who had crashed his vehicle near a school.

Both he and a woman passenger identified as Estrella Crespo took off on foot.

Crespo was caught and is charged with disobeying an officer.

Martelle was later apprehended and is facing multiple charges in both states.

Police did not say if Shoemaker was injured in the incident.
