A mistrial has been declared in the case of Karen Read, accused of killing her Boston cop boyfriend John O'Keefe with her SUV in Canton.
The jury sent the judge a note yesterday saying some strongly support conviction and others firmly believe the burden was not met by the commonwealth. The judge then released the jury and declared a mistrial, and ordered the sides to return to court July 22nd to discuss the next steps.
The Norfolk DA's office indicates that they will retry the case.
Meantime, State Police detective Michael Proctor has been relieved of duty and formally transferred out of the Norfolk DA's office State Police unit. Proctor has been under investigation by the State Police internal affairs office over alleged serious misconduct as lead detective in the Read case. The announcement came hours after a mistrial was declared in the Read trial for the killing of her Boston cop boyfriend in 2022.
Proctor will now face a duty status hearing to determine whether he will be retained, placed on restricted duty or suspended.
