A 33-year-old mother is being called a hero after helping save the life of a drowning swimmer in Osterville Friday.
Frances Lonergan of Longmeadow, Massachusetts was vacationing with her family, including newborn baby when she heard screams coming from the waters of Dowes Beach.
Mrs Lonergan had pulled the 46-year-old victim from the waters with the help of another person from New York.
Police arrived and the victim was taken to the hospital for treatment. According to a statement from Barnstable Police:
“Witnesses explained that Mrs. Lonergan’s heroic actions undoubtedly saved the swimmer's life. We are extremely grateful for the bystanders who put their own safety at risk to save the life of a complete stranger. Your actions exemplify true bravery and compassion. Job Well Done!”
The rescued swimmer was taken to the hospital, but officials have not released additional information.
