Free Tuition, Bus Fare Part Of Massachusetts Budget

Free community college tuition for all state residents is one of the items included in the state budget agreement reached this week.

The 58-billion-dollar budget for the fiscal year that began July first also adds hundreds of millions of dollars for the MBTA.

It will allow more of the state's regional transit systems to go fare free, and will begin the online sale of lottery tickets to people over the age of 21.

This is the 14th straight year that the legislature has failed to produce a budget before the start of the fiscal year.

The budget is already 19 days late. Once she gets the spending plan the Governor has ten days to review it.

Right now the state is operating on a so-called 1/12th budget.
