New Emergency Shelter Rules Begin Thursday In Massachusetts

Activists are calling on Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey to rescind changes to the state's emergency shelter system.

Starting this Thursday, a five-day limit will be imposed on how long families can stay in overflow shelters.

Meantime, Senator Ryan Fatman says the state can't keep spending a billion dollars a year on the emergency shelter system.

Some families will be prioritized for longer stays based on their circumstances, while those not given priority will face the new limit rather than the previous 30 day limit.

A protest yesterday at the State House was organized by the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless.
