DA: Fatal Hit-And-Run Caused By Street Racing

Springfield police say the hit-and-run crash that killed a mother earlier this week happened because the driver was street racing.

According to investigators, a car driven by 18-year-old Nathan Colon was going more than 70 miles per hour down Boston Road Monday when he fatally struck 36-year-old Kristine Andrews, who was crossing the street.

Officers believe Colon and another driver were racing for almost two miles before the crash.

Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni states,

“I encourage parents to talk with new drivers about the responsibility of operating a vehicle. Those new drivers must understand the consequences of their choices on themselves and other people. Experienced drives alike must remind themselves of the same issues.

Please slow down and be safe.

Ms. Andrews was simply trying to cross the street. These types of tragedies are completely preventable.”

Authorities are still looking for the other driver.
