Chinese railcar manufacturer CRRC, with its Springfield facility, is being asked to make 45 new cars for Philadelphia's public transit agency.
The "Philadelphia Inquirer" reports CRRC's bid was 137-and-a-half-million-dollars.
The Southeastern Pennsylvania Public Transit Authority cars will be initially made in China and then finished in the Springfield facility, which is expected to be in October.
CRRC also has contracts to build cars for the MBTA and public transit in Los Angeles.
Meantime, the Governor has toured a mock up of the new MBTA railcars planned for Boston. Baker says the more than 400 cars at a cost of some 2 and a half million dollars a piece will revitalize and modernize the entire system. Those cars are also being built in Springfield. The plant is still being built at the old Westinghouse property. Actual building will begin early next year.
