Amherst School Merger Plight Ends

It's once, twice, three times a failed attempt in Amherst to pass an expensive plan to consolidate two elementary schools.

A majority of voters did approve the 67-million-dollar plan on Tuesday to combine the Wildwood and Fort River elementary schools, but not enough voters showed up to make it count.

That means the project will be shelved because the offer of state funds is off the table.

The town will now have to return the 34 million dollars that the state had put up for the project.
