Worcester Native Steve Palermo Dies

Major League Baseball is remembering a former umpire and longtime Kansas City area resident.

Steve Palermo died yesterday after a battle with cancer.

Palermo  worked as a Major League Baseball umpire from 1977 until 1991 when he  was shot while trying to help two women who were being robbed outside of  a Dallas restaurant.

Palermo, who eventually regained the ability to walk with assistance, was 67-years-old.

Palermo grew up in Worcester and was a mainstay on the MLB Umpiring staff.  He was known for his smooth skills on the field and off.

He attended both Worcester State and Norwich University.
