Senator Joe Lieberman is emerging as the top candidate for FBI director.
In a White House photo-op today, Trump said he will announce his pick "soon."
Trump fired FBI chief James Comey last week, saying he was not doing a good job.
Lieberman is 75 and would start serving a 10-year term if he is nominated and confirmed by the Senate.
The veteran Connecticut lawmaker was the Democratic vice presidential nominee in the 2000 election.
He later became an independent.
