Governor Charlie Baker is proposing a bill that would allow local police to detain some illegal immigrants at the request of federal officials.
The bill comes in response to a Supreme Judicial Court ruling that says law enforcement in Massachusetts cannot comply with federal detainer requests.
Under current law, local police would be making an illegal arrest.
Baker's proposal would let local police hold illegal immigrants who are suspected of terrorism or have committed serious crimes in the past.
