An immigrant avoiding deportation by seeking sanctuary in an Amherst church is getting support from U.S. Senator Ed Markey.
Lucio Perez, who is originally from Guatemala, has been at First Congregational Church for several months.
Markey visited him on Sunday ahead of a town hall meeting in Amherst.
The senator says Perez's story is an example of the need for a nationwide comprehensive immigration plan.
Markey says he has written two letters on behalf of Perez and says that he will will do whatever is necessary to keep Perez and his family in this country.
