An agreement is in place to complete the transfer of power in the state Senate.
Current President Harriette Chandler of Worcester is agreeing to hand over power to Ashland Senator Karen Spilka in late July.
The transition will happen days before the legislature wraps up their formal sessions for the year.
Chandler took over as president in December when Senator Stan Rosenberg gave up the leadership role amid sex assault allegations against his husband.
