Springfield firefighters are being equipped with the anti-overdose agent Narcan.
Mayor Domenic Sarno, Fire Commissioner B.J. Calvi and Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni made that announcement at City Hall on Wednesday.
Calvi said the addition will help since firefighters are usually the first emergency responders to show up for a medical emergency.
The Commissioner says on average firefighters get somewhere between 5 and 7 overdose calls and the ability to administer Narcan will literally be a lifesaver.
