A Springfield judge is stepping down due to his battle with Lou Gehrig's disease.
The Governor's Council on Wednesday approved the retirement of Springfield District Court First Justice William Boyle.
He was nominated in 1999 by Governor Paul Cellucci, who himself died from complications from ALS in 2013.
Boyle is a former Hampden County prosecutor and was the Springfield City Council president from 1993 to 1998.
