Baker Wants More Controls On Closing Colleges

Governor Charlie Baker is calling for more state oversight of private colleges and universities operating in Massachusetts.

Baker's request comes as a growing number of small schools in New England are struggling to survive.

Three small colleges in Vermont are closing this spring, and the collapse of Mount Ida College in Newton remains fresh in the memory of public officials.

Baker's bill would require schools planning to close to make a plan for how students will complete their degrees.
