Local Lawmakers React To Weekend Tragedies

Western Massachusetts' congressional delegation is commenting on the mass shootings this weekend in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

Congressman Richard Neal said thoughts and prayers are not enough and said he has put forward ten common-sense proposals to prevent future mass shootings as others call for an end to the August recess to address the issue of gun violence.

Representative Jim McGovern noted that earlier this year, President Trump said the U.S. is being invaded by immigrants and that the El Paso shooter said he wanted to stop the invasion; McGovern said words matter and that Trump is one of the biggest security threats in the country.

There have been calls for lawmakers to return to DC in order to pass a measures to ban assault weapons as well as other proposals on the issue.
