Special Unit Revisits High Profile Cases

The Massachusetts State Police is announcing a new statewide Unresolved Case Unit to resolve homicides and other violent crimes.

The new unit will consist of five troopers who are experienced homicide investigators who will work with district attorneys to identify open cases where a renewed focus might help. The announcement comes just about a week after Gary Schara of West Springfield pleaded guilty to the 1992 killing of an Agawam woman.

The crime was unsolved for a quarter-century until Hampden D.A. Anthony Gulluni and local and state authorities took another look at it.
