Bail System Under Review

New York is getting rid of cash bails. Massachusetts will not. A state commission looking at the bail structuring system in the state concedes there are issues but the current reforms should be given time to work.

The commission was appointed after a State Supreme Court case in which the high court ruled that a judge must consider the financial constraints of a defendant while determining bail.

Meantime, the Judiciary Committee has at least one bill before them that seeks to increase the number of crimes considered for dangerousness hearings as a way to keep dangerous offenders behind bars.
