Facial Recognition Software Ban Considered Monday

The Springfield City Council is going to again consider a ban on police use of facial recognition technology.

The council has scheduled a special meeting for Monday night at 7:30. Mayor Domenic Sarno and Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood are against the proposed ban, saying the technology could be an effective tool to against crime in the future.

Facial recognition is not currently being used in Springfield.

The Mayor has promised a veto of the measure if it gets to his desk. It is unclear whether the city council vote would be enough to override the veto.
