The Springfield Catholic Diocese is making changes to Mass celebrations in response to increasing concerns about the spread of coronavirus.
The diocese says the sign of peace at Mass, which generally involves the shaking of hands, will be temporarily discontinued, there will be modifications made to the receiving of Holy Communion, and the holy water fountains will be left empty.
Parishes and schools in the diocese are also being instructed to review their current sanitary policies.
Officials say that the protocols will remain in place until further notice.
