Hampden County Sheriff Nick Cocchi and District Attorney Anthony Gulluni expressed public opposition to releasing inmates because of the coronavirus pandemic.
An advocacy group is asking the state Supreme Court to release inmates who are potentially at-risk of being exposed; the state Supreme Court ruled earlier this month that courts can release inmates awaiting trial for non-violent offenses.
Cocchi and Gulluni yesterday repeated an argument they have previously made that releasing inmates does not keep the general public safe, nor the inmates themselves.
Cocchi added that no inmates have tested positive for the coronavirus at the Hampden County Jail in Ludlow.
