Baby Unit At Holyoke Medical Center Being Eliminated

Holyoke Medical Center is informing the state of its plan to close its maternity services unit, which will leave the city without a birthing center.

The plan is to submit a 90-day notice to close the thirteen-bed obstetrics service and ten-bassinet infant nursery at the end of this month.

The hospital's CEO points to declining birth numbers.

The decision comes after HMC temporarily closed the birthing center in April to house patients from the Holyoke Soldiers' Home as that facility dealt with a deadly coronavirus outbreak.
