Merriam-Webster Changes Definition For "Racism"

(24/7 News St, Louis) -- A Missouri woman is asking Springfield-based Merriam-Webster to change its definition for "racism" and the dictionary publisher is agreeing to make the edit.

Twenty-two-year-old Kennedy Mitchum says she didn't think the standing definition of "racism" was adequate after having arguments in which people have pointed to the definition to prove they're not racist.

Mitchum says the old definition reflected prejudice but it should also address systemic racism.

Merriam-Webster editor Alex Chambers says a new definition is currently being drafted.
