Summer Ofter Deadly For Young Drivers In Region

We are in the very start of what many consider the “100 deadliest days of the summer.”

That is the period from Memorial Day to Labor Day when we usually see a dramatic increase in serious and deadly traffic accidents.

Officials say it is generally because of the there are more teen drivers on the roads.

Triple A officials say there were more than 47 hundred traffic accidents involving teen drivers last year.

More than 600 teen drivers were injured. Officials say it came out to one injured teen every four hours.

And, if that were not enough officials at Triple A says June is the number one month for crashes.

According to the new AAA Foundation Traffic Safety Culture Index, about 72% of teen drivers aged 16-18 admitted to having engaged in at least one of the following risky behaviors in the past 30 days:

•           Driving 10 mph over the speed limit on a residential street (47%)

•           Driving 15 mph over the speed limit on a freeway (40%)

•           Texting (35%)

•           Red-light running (32%)

•           Aggressive driving (31%)

•           Drowsy driving (25%)

•           Driving without a seatbelt (17%)
