Governor Charlie Baker has announced details of a bill he's proposing designed to increase accountability of police. Baker's proposal would create a certification system for police officers, with licenses that need to be renewed every three years.
It would create a process where officers who fail to live up to their oath can be decertified.
The bill would also create a database where anyone could look up the status of a police officer.
The Chairman of the Black and Latino Caucus on Beacon Hill, Springfield State Representative Carlos Gonzales calls the Governor's bill "an important first step" in pursuit of a major police accountability law.
Gonzales says that he is bolstered by the commitment of both the House Speaker and Senate President in getting a bill done to affect change.
