The race against the clock has started on Beacon Hill.
The Conference Committee has been named for the Police Reform Bill.
Carlos Gonzales, the Springfield Democrat who is lead of the Latino Legislative Coalition has been named to the committee which has to try to get a bill done by Friday.
The legislation comes in response to public outcry after George Floyd was killed by police in Minneapolis.
The House-approved bill would not limit qualified immunity, but it would strip decertified officers of protections against civil prosecution. It also bans chokeholds, and it restricts but does not eliminate “no-knock” warrants.
The House bill would also create a law enforcement certification program, and it would limit the use of tear gas.
There is no one who believes such a controversial bill would be able to pass in informal session and the governor is not saying whether the session should be extended into August.
