New England Governors Give Temporary "Thaw" To Youth Hockey

The governors of Massachusetts and several other states are extending the ban on interstate hockey until the end of January.

The order from Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Vermont would have expired today.

The ban involves traveling into other states for youth hockey for public or private schools or leagues. The ban does not impact interstate hockey involving college, pro or U.S. national team activities.

The delay is in direct response to increasing Covid19 numbers. For example, the last report out of Boston showed 118 deaths from coronavirus, the largest single day total in the state since May. The spike in deaths yesterday pushed the total number of lives lost to the pandemic in the state over 12 thousand. There were over 61 hundred new cases of coronavirus reported in the state yesterday. There are also more than 22 hundred people hospitalized with coronavirus in the state, including 433 in intensive care.
