State Rejects Power Plant For Springfield

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection is revoking approval for a controversial power plant in Springfield.

The state sent a letter to Palmer Renewable Energy on Friday, citing delays in the start of construction at the site on Page Boulevard in East Springfield.

The biomass project has faced opposition based on environmental concerns.

The DEP says Palmer Energy can request a hearing on the matter.

State Senator Adam Gomez, a former Springfield City Council member, said the news feels like the final chapter of a twelve-year fight.

No word on whether or not the proponents will file an appeal.
