A Tennessee man accused of killing a two-year-old during a road rage incident in 2017 was inadvertently released from jail due to a clerical error. A judge ordered Tylan McCray to be held on a $15 million bond during a court appearance on Tuesday (August 17). When the bond amount was entered into the system, it was listed at just $15,000.
By the end of the day, McCray was able to post the $15,000 bond and was released from jail. He wasn't free for very long as authorities took him back into custody the next day.
McCray is facing charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and employment of a firearm. He was the passenger in a car and allegedly opened fire on Leslie Washington's vehicle after she got into an argument with four men in a black sedan. Washington's two-year-old daughter was shot in the head and died two days later.
The victim's family was outraged when they learned about the mistake.
"I could've been out somewhere and spotted him, or he spotted me. That's scary with him already attempting to kill me and my other kids," Washington told WREG. "They told me they had TBI out looking for him," she said. "I really was heartbroken because I felt like the justice system had failed us again."
"They need to take their jobs a little more serious, especially when you're dealing with criminals, murderers, and rapists. I think the person needs to be reprimanded for their actions," she added.
Officials said that they have addressed the matter with the employee.
