Former Police Captain Avoids Jail Time

A former West Springfield police captain was sentenced on Wednesday for stealing over 17-thousand dollars from the evidence room and then returning it.

The Massachusetts Attorney General's Office recommended Daniel Spaulding serve six months in jail for using the money to pay mortgage and other personal bills in 2016 and 2017.

But Hampden Superior Court Judge Michael Callan instead ordered Spaulding to only serve probation on the charge of using an official position for unwarranted privileges.
