The Sox lost two of three games in Baltimore and are now tied with Seattle for the final American League wild card spot, with Toronto one game behind.
Boston still could catch the Yankees for the top wild card, trailing New York by two games with three to play.
The Red Sox play the Nationals tonight.
The Yankees are home with Tampa.
