Springfield State Rep Carlos Gonzales, who is also the Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee is calling on the Governor to be more creative when it comes to nominating judges. He says right now there is a lack of diversity on the bench and criminal justice reform cannot truly happen without a more diverse bench.
“We can enact all the laws, but how they are interpreted makes a difference in the life of someone before the court. Our judicial system must not fall behind the progress made with the recent criminal justice reforms enacted by the legislature,” said Representative Gonzalez.
The State Rep says he believes the judiciary should reflect the population impacted by their decisions. It is pivotal to foster public trust and confidence.
There has been no response from the Governor.
